What happends when a cop arrest you?

So yesterday I got in hand cuffs for a hit a run but i was a passenger so nothing happened to us besides the driver but still got in trouble for leaving the scene. I left my phone in the car were we had parked it cause it was a dead end, know my question is what happens to my phone I want it back they said they take care of it but should I call the police station to get it back?
